(1) They were blitz matches (You conveniently forgot to mention that).
(2) They were all played in one day (I think - Ed will probably know better), so
 he might have been a bit fatigued.
(3) That was 1998. Anand is the best player in the world TODAY. He got the chess
oscar last year - HE is the second player to have gotten it twice. First was
kasparov.
