Earlier in this post you mentioned the Apollo project and I think that's a great
thing to mention in this context.  Because it's a matter of infinite resources
versus practical resources.

What you'd probably get from Microsoft is a relabeled <insert name of top
program here>, they'd just buy one.  If they didn't do that, they'd end up with
something similar to what everyone else had, but it would take them a while to
make it good.  They might even ship something that wasn't as strong as your
typical program, because the top programs are written by very experienced and
devoted people over a long period of time.
