There are a large number of goals to the project.  If you read the chess

That is one possible use of the data.

Do they provide an open API to get at their data if you use a different engine?
Do they provide a complete schema to their database?   Do they provide a
standard interface to query the data such as ANSI SQL?

The goals are stated in the FAQ, but *you* can use the data, which is donated to
the public domain, for any purpose you choose.
