You might try (under "Computer Chess Links" using this message board) under "Freeware and Shareware Programs" for a large list of programs that can be had without cost. Here is a monster list of downloadable stuff from GambitSoft: http://www.gambitsoft.com/sharee.htm Be sure to read KK's excellent list: http://www.gambitsoft.com/komputer.htm If you are using Windows 95/98/NT, then I have two recommendations: 1. If you are something of a technophobe, get Arasan. It plays good chess, has a very nice interface, and a monkey could install it. 2. If you want the meanest, leanest, rock-em, sock-em, freely-available chess, then get Crafty+Winboard. But you will have to read documents, edit files, and twiddle around to get things working right. If you are technically inclinded, it won't be too bad. I have several commercial programs (of which Rebel 10 is my favorite) but I like Crafty+Winboard as well or better than anything else in the universe (chess programs that is).
