If you do not have a programming background, it might be a good idea to start
off with something like Visual Basic, in an environment like Excel.  Or try one
of the databases, which have simplified basic-like languages.  I use 4D for
accounting programming, and it works well.

If you have some programming or engineering experience, you might be able to
start off with C, using the sample programs that come with the typical package.
