It turns out that I had seen this last night so I wasn't going mad. The reason was a bug introduced when changing the ordering of my search code that meant that the check extension was not being applied for each move but only to the position that was in check. This didn't matter when depth was high, it is equivalent to doing it after making the move; but for low depths it meant I called quiescent with the position being in check. This has solved some of my puzzles as to why some things weren't being seen at the ply I thought they would be seen at. Andy.
