Think of a chess game like walking along the top of a fence rail. Little bobbles of balance won't throw you off, but one real mis-step and you've fallen. Not possible to say, in a general way, for instance, what does "average" really mean in this context? Any specific engine and book could be tested of course, but a really good, hand tuned and well tested opening book will be a huge help in stopping quick lost games in a tournament.
