Sorry to counter with a question. I've been studying the Gnuchess source code recently (Gnuchess 5.08 totally fails to find the mate) in order to improve my understanding of Chess programming. When searching it is definitely going deep enough, to ply 30+, and although the first move is correct it soon strays out of the correct line. The search routine also has check and one-reply extensions. It must be hard to guess why without looking at the code, but would anyone like to have a stab in the dark as to what the most likely reason could be? I would much appreciate it. Cheers, Mike.
