Hmmm

"wanna be" ... ? I don't think anyone in their right mind would want to be a
chess-programmer.. It's not very "cool" , and doesn't make you much of a
"babe-magnet". That out of the way. :

To start with, I think there already are chessprogrammer-only boards, such
as Tim Mann's yahoo-group.

With restrictions like you put, even for the members you'd allow in the first
place .. you'll quickly kill any such board. Some reasons for that would be,
-that I would not want to be a member of such a "elitair" group. I'm not sure
you realise this, but writing chessprograms, *from scratch* isn't very special.
You have a slightly unrealistic view to believe those "onlookers", which are
all somehow newbies apparantly, get terribly "impressed".
-Then who are you really going to allow? Many of those "onlookers" are or have
attempted to write a chessprogram. (Are you going to judge if their programs
and attempts are strong enough to be allowed? What about other areas, write a
GUI, or databaseprogram, or an application to draw a nice set of computer-
chesspieces, etc, etc.) What to do with a new chessprogrammer? You won't give
him any help, because he's not allowed to the board.
-A lot of chessprogrammers have stronger/weaker programs then yours, and do
not currently work on the same problems as your current "interesting" toppic
on the board. Therefore, they might not have something interesting to
contribute at that time. I do not post so often on CCC, because I feel I have
nothing *interesting* to contribute at that time, or would repeat what is being
posted/awnsered. If I were forced to post once in a while, I would be flooding
and your precious bandwitch in the first place. And if it's then not
interesting enough to your taste you'd even disactivate my account.
-Most other "onlookers" are "experts" in other areas. (Strong players, know
everything there is to know about some program, etc.) You do not find their
posts interesting? I do. Also these do *help* the programmers. And so do the
people that do computer vs computer testmatches you seem to hate.

Please look at the CCC again, and when you can imagine people thinking
different from you and have different interests and expertise, in "computer
chess", and you'll see there is little bandwitch "wasted" at all.

Greetings,
Stan
