  There are lots of extensions also an alternative to implementation.
  If I understood you, you only extend if the extension total for that
   ply is greater than 1. You might try extending the even if less than 1.
   That way it a few plys can add to a complete ply.

   Quick top of the head list of possible extensions:
      Check, single reply (with or without check), king safety extensions,
      pawn extensions (pawn to 7th), recapture, singular extensions,
      multiple successive checks, null move extension.

      Basically extensions boil down to one fundamental idea:
        Something just happened that could destabilize the game, I may even
        want to boost the evaluation value due to it (pawn extensions).
        However, I am going to extend to make sure the bonus or destabilization
        holds at least N ply (where N may be < 1).
