Subject: Crafty: Tips of the Week

Hello Crafty Fans!

My tips for this week is based mainly on older versions of Crafty. How do you
get more performance out of them?

#1) Recompile the source with a newer compiler. VC++ 2005 E. EdB1. You might
have to experiment with the optimizations.

#2) Using an SMP version of Crafty. Use the mt command to use more threads.

Example: P4 (1) 3.0 Ghz, HT enabled. With the older version, 18.01 smp, do your
bench with the following:

mt 2
hash 96m
hashp 24m
cache 8m
bench <Enter>

Run the program again...

mt 1
hash 96m
hashp 24m
cache 8m
bench <Enter>

See the difference in results? Try the single CPU version in comparison to the
mt 1 benchmark.

Newer versions however, 19.17, do not necessarily work the same way. In some of
the older versions you could see a 300-400k nodes/second increase.

Enjoy,

Joshua Haglund
