There is no reason to make this root-dependent. Just scale the material score with a bonus - the side with a significant material advantage (say >3 pawns) gets a bonus for having fewer pieces. This encourages trading down pieces when you are ahead material (but be careful with very low materal .. e.g. pawnless endings with an extra piece are generally hard to win, so you can trade down too low). --Jon
