After searching full width (all moves) to a depth of x, the engine has to stop and cleanup the position (analyze captures, promotions, checks...) only. If you don't do qsearch, the engine will stupidly evaluate a position after a fixed depth. E.g If I am down a bishop, but I can capture the opponent's queen--I have to look at the capture--that's qsearch. If I don't do qsearch, all I see is that I'm down a bishop (the eval part) while I can capture the opponent's queen--not smart. Michael
