This is an outstanding question. Surprising that it hasn't been posed before. Anecdotes from people must also be really welcome. I've found that programs have helped me very little. Far too discouraging to actually use them, they are too strong. Too lazy also. It ain't pretty, but it's the truth. Same applies to databases. I buy programs just because I'm curious about what they think is the strongest move in any given position. I find that a delusional attitude of omniscience, and methodical concentration can up my performance about 100 points. It helps when one of your buddies, a 1900-2000 player, advocates 'getting an attitude, and just playing good moves' and proves it by performing at over 2500 in an international 9 round tournament...you just gotta believe.
