I'm going to start by saying I am not a good player so take this advice for what
it's worth! Still, it seems that if you are getting beaten at move 2/3 you would
be better off spending time on the ideas behind openings, rather than the
specifics. And for that the usual ideas - Fine's "The Idea's Behind The Chess
Openings" or Seirawan's "Winning Chess Endings" are pretty good.
