If one has a chess program, you have an opponent any time you want, instead of waiting for a human opponent or a trip to a chess club. Just the ability to play more games means that one should improve, even a little. And with tactical exercises, and coaching features of some programs, I'm sure one can expand their chess vision. The degree of improvement is debatable, but to those that don't have a chess club or chess teacher available, chess programs, along with books, will help someone improve their chess. In a year I have improved about 120 points using Fritz and its database features, although I cannot give it all the credit. I would probably attibute 50 points to the engine
