Interesting.  Takes me a while to find it (Qxf4 fails high at 644k nodes) but
not too long to resolve it (#6 at just over 1m nodes).  Thats doing the same as
you: 1 ply check and mate threat, checks first ply of qsearch.

You're doing something better than me.  I'd like to find it sooner and resolve
it later :)
