I have implemented a very basic opening book for Kiwi, and I'm using the (quite famous) "gm2600" game collection to populate it. The collection contains 27202 games for more than 2 million positions. I have decided to include in the book only games longer than 30 moves (most of them are), position that occurred at least 6 times and used the first 30 plies of each game. I was a bit surprised to get about 11000 unique positions with these constrains. Even considering 16 bytes per position, the full book would take only 171K. This is good for me, as I can easily load everything in memory and don't need anything more than a simple binary search, but I'm left wondering what is the content of other books that sometimes takes several megabytes of space. So... did I do something wrong or... what do you put in your book?
