If you use mate threat extension(and if I understand correctly you use it) then
I suggest to limit it to the case when
the following conditions happens:
1)There is no another extension for the last 2 plies.
2)The side that threats the mate has not a big advantage of more than 2 pawns
and it means that the evaluation is better than 2 pawns against the side to
move.

these ideas also should be productive for real games.
