The "flat" 3D sets look better the bigger you make them. The pieces are quite
complex (in terms of polygon count), and shrinking them up sometimes produces
unpleasant results (depending on the piece set).

My suggestion is, if you are going to use one of the flat sets, have the board
take up as much space as you can possibly use.
