No, of course not. My main blitz test opponents are Ruffian and List, and my
main slower time control opponents are Junior 8 and Hiarcs 9. Mind you, I know
and agree that one needs a LOT more games before drawing serious conclusions,
but that is extremely time consuming, so before such an investment, one must
also use one's judgment. I've already cut short matches where the settings were
actually ahead (at least in blitz), because of the way it was playing.
The previous settings were at 170 King Safety, instead of the current 165, and
120 mobility, instead of the curent 115. Great results in the test suite, and
they were even ahead in the blitz match by 2 points after some 25 games, but too
many games were just ridiculous. Ruffian lost a number of won positions by
overextending itself, and the play would not hold up to slower time controls. I
pay close attention to not only the moves and plays, but also the evaluations,
and the lines the engine gives. So, even though I didn't have hundreds of games,
the play I saw was enough to convince me those settings were not ideal.
Overall, I was quite favourably impressed in this match (with the published
settings) by the play. It seemed quite agressive, but not overly so, with
balanced play (as far as I saw), and good tactics.
Needless to say, I will do much more testing to get more substantial results,
but it passed the first two tests: my personal judgment (completely subjective)
and the initial blitz match against Ruffian. Mind you, I've gone through at
*least* 30 sets of settings, so this isn't based on one cute game with a nice
combination at the end.
I could be wrong though, so I'm going to finish testing on the WM test suite,
run the Nunn 2 blitz match against List, and then another 30m+5s against Junior
8.
