Perhaps not so crazy!? I'm not an expert but recently became aware that the RAM on my Compaq computer is not optimized. It looks like the manufacturer disabled the "DDR" feature, so it only runs at half the speed that is possible. Maybe this makes it run cooler and more reliably, I don't know. This is controlled by BIOS settings, but those settings were omitted from the BIOS setup utility by Compaq, so there's no easy way to change them. There are some third party utilities that can tweak the BIOS RAM settings, although risky to use, and only available for older computer models. It looks like the RAM-tweak-utility authors gave up, because the manufacturers have now generally quit publishing complete specifications for their RAM (or so I'm told). I suppose you wouldn't have this kind of problem if you buy your own motherboard, processor, RAM, an original BIOS, etc and build the computer yourself... :) WP
