I think you should say what you want it for.  Also, there are worthy products
that cost more than that.
My favorites:
Commercial Chess playing program: Rebel 10
Freely available chess playing program: Crafty+Winboard
Commercial Chess database: CA40

But the reason I like certain products is because of what I want to do with
them.  I suggest reading the reviews on this site, as they will probably be more
helpful than "I like program foo" "I prefer program bar!!"
