Authors should take als ocopyright infrigement seriously as well - as unprotected copyrights may fall into public domain status. "aspirin" and "escalators" are two of the better known copyrighted names that fell into public domain from lack of copyright enforcement. "xerox" is a copyright that Xerox has gone to great lengths to protect.
