Subject: A do-it-yourself robotic arm

Here's a picture of a do-it-yourself robotic arm suitable for moving chess
pieces:

It's made from about US$500 of Lego/Mindstorms parts including a pair of
programmable microcontrollers. It appears to have three degrees of freedom and
is fed moves via a serial link to a computer running a chess program.

It would be interesting to see one of these hooked up to an auto sensory
chessboard. It probably wouldn't be too hard to enable the arm to press a chess
clock after each move. Not good for blitz, though; the motor speed required
might be too much and the arm would fly apart.
