A hobby kit robotic arm should be half the Lego kit in price. And probably have 4 DOF instead of 3. Lego Mindstorms are wondeful if you want a re-configurable kit. And for 500USD you could get an arm kit with 5 DOF and the ability to run a chess program. The chess board sensors might push the cost over the half k USD mark. MvH Dan Andersson
