I would like to buy a new PC. A difficult choice because there are so many
processors out at the moment. I also don't know for sure if I have to buy a
faster dual PC or with the same money a bit stronger single cpu-PC:
The Intel (P4, Xeon, Celeron, etc) loose against all AMD's at the moment with
Computer Chess.
The fastest AMD cpu's available at the moment are:
* AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 (S939, 2,6GHz, 1MB, Boxed)
* AMD Opteron 250 (S940, 2,4GHz, 1MB, Boxed)
* AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (S939, 2,4 GHz, 1MB, Boxed)
* AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (S-A, 2,20GHz, 512KB, 400MHz FSB, Boxed)
* AMD Athlon MP 2800+ (S-A, 2,13GHz, 512KB, 266MHz FSB, Boxed)
* AMD Duron 1800 (S-A, 1,80GHz, 64KB, 266MHz FSB)
* AMD Sempron 3100+ (S754, 1,8GHz, 256KB, 333MHz FSB, Boxed)
Prices vary a lot. The prices of the FX-55, Opteron 250, Athlon 64 4000+ are
quiet absurd.
If I take only cpu's <= E 300 then I come to:
* AMD Opteron 146 (S940, 2,0GHz, 1MB, Boxed) € 303,-
* AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (S939, 2,2GHz, 512KB, Boxed) € 287,95
* AMD Athlon MP 2800+ (S-A, 2,13GHz, 512KB, 266MHz FSB, Boxed) € 205,-
* AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (S-A, 2,20GHz, 512KB, 400MHz FSB, Boxed) € 202,-
* AMD Duron 1800 (S-A, 1,80GHz, 64KB, 266MHz FSB) € 47,-
* AMD Sempron 3100+ (S754, 1,8GHz, 256KB, 333MHz FSB, Boxed) € 127,-
If I look in Spec CPU 2000(CINT 2000)
[http://www.spec.org/cpu2000/results/cpu2000.html] what are the results of these
cpu's then I find that almost none of these are in spec int 2000 :-). Only the
opteron 146 is given with a score of:
73.0 = AMD Opteron (TM) 146
My current cpu is:
237 = Pentium III 800Mhz
So this cpu is 3,25 times faster.
Question 1) Does some knows what the other cpu's are about worth?
Question 2) Why are they not included in spec int 2000 anymore?
The fastest published Spec Int 2000 result is:
45.6 = AMD Opteron (TM) 150 (2.4Ghz)
- os: SuSE Linux 8.0 SLES 64 bit (SP3)
- compiler: SuSE optional gcc 3.3 compiler (20030312) (from SLES8 SP3)
On windows 2003 this processor makes (I took the Opteron 250 here ... but it
doesn't matter a lot):
58.6 - AMD Opteron (TM) 250 (2.4Ghz)
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003
- Intel C++ 8.0 build 20031229Z
Question 3) Why is there such a big difference between Windows 2003 and Linux?
Does the compiler / os is not fully 64bit?
On this Windows XP the FX-55 makes:
53.8 = AMD Athlon (TM) 64 FX-55(2.6 Ghz)
Question 4) Wouldn't the FX-55 ran much faster if it was running on Linux (suse
too) ? Wouldn't this generate the best crafty single cpu benchmark ever?
