A few pieces of advice. Athlon 64/Opteron is going to be by far the most upgradeable computer: dual core chips will come out in 1-2 years or so (but be careful and get a chip with the right number of pins). OTOH the Athlon XP/MP line is finished, and Intel is having a very hard time ramping up the clockspeed on their P4s. While Intel does have a dual-core solution in the works, the power requirements will be ludicrous. The compiler (not so much the OS) makes a _huge_ difference in benchmarks. Last time (1 year ago or so) Zappa was 30% faster on the intel compiler than with gcc. Compiling a program in 64 bits will give any program at least a 10-15% performance increase just from the extra registers. anthony
