What you describe is something I do often. Some classics like
Bronstein's Zurich tournament of 1953 and Nottingham 1936 by Alekhine
are in PGN. The added bonus of using PGN alongside the actual book,
besides having to setup the pieces a thousand times, is that todays strong
engines can analyse key complex positions from these games. It's fun to see
if some of the original analysis holds up and conversely whether the
computers can keep up to some of the great moves played in these two books.
