At the root is a very poor way of using endgame databases. What is the point of stumbling into a position and _then_ discovering whether it is won or lost or drawn? Doesn't it make more sense to use the tablebases to _choose_ when to reduce to 5 or fewer pieces? If the authors of programs probing only at the root would watch on ICC, they'd see just how many times this helps crafty draw a lost ending or win a drawn ending.
