It does not matter what number you set the starting Elo to. The thing that is important is the distance between the scores. However, just so that people will not freak out, I usually set the score to what I think is approximately the Elo of the center of the group. If you want to raise some eyebrows, set it to 1800 or 3000. Always good for a laugh.
