Are you sure that the version 16.3 of the crafty.eng still clears the hashtables
? When I have tried this, I can see in the output-Window that for example at the
first 8 plies crafty only shows a evaluation and the first ply of the pv. So
crafty must get the evaluation from the hashtables.

But another problem is that the fritz-engine of crafty didn“t use his own
openingbook and the tablebases.
The winboard-engine of crafty could be configured to use his own openeingbook
and the tablebases, but then you have the problem with clearing the hashtables
after each move.
So both variants are still have their disadvantages.
