I am conducting an experiment to test the widely-held belief that chess engines without a book will be at a severe disadvantage versus strong humans. I've set up Over-Rated on ICC to play without a book, and during this time he will only play humans and require a 3 second increment since playing with no book essentially gives the human time odds. Over-Rated's ICC rating was 3518 when the experiment started. I have played a few games with some top-rated GM's in the past, but this will be the biggest such test I've conducted. Interestingly, so far Over-Rated is 100% against humans without a book (including the previous games before this experiment), but admittedly few games have been played. If you're interested in following the progress you can examine the games by using the history and search command on ICC, and I may post games here time permitting. I will probably let the test run for at least a couple weeks. Suggestions, comments welcome. Hardware & Software Over-Rated is currently running on a quad 2.4GHz Opteron (850s) using Shredder 8 with gambit settings (taken from the Shredder Classic GUI) using 512MB hash.
