Hi John

>thanks Steve ! oh man ! german ? :) i'll see what i can do

try using a translation program such as World Lingo or Alta Vista
you can set them up to translate the entire page in one shot

>>for example , if a model is not working but is old - does it count as a
>collectible ?

this all depends on why you collect
collecting the old computers is closely related to ones particular taste and
preferences

if you are collecting only for the future value of the computer, then having a
defective unit ,which in not repairable ,is almost worthless

likewise ,if you are collecting to play the computers,or play them against each
other then again a defective unit has no value

however if you are collecting for historical interest then a cosmetically
pristine computer with the original box,manual,pieces,etc..will have some value
albeit a non-monetary one

on the German web site i sent you there is a "Rare" page

this will give you a fairly good idea of what is considered a rare chess
computer today

you will also see the names of some collector's that own that particular
computer

unlike PC chess Software where you cam virtually pick up any program (whether it
be older or brand new )in an instant ,collecting the old computers will take
time and effort if you want a well rounded collection with examples of computers
from all of the manufacturers of the day

i have been collecting since 1977, the year of the first commercially available
chess computer and i am still searching for several models

Good Luck!
Steve

steve
