Hi,

example:
We have 100.000 Arena downloads.
If each download produce 10 games we have a Million games without any problems
:-)

But after all I believe only 2-4% from the downloaders give here results for
others. And to collect a big database is today a little problem. For around 3-4
years the most downloaders of engines added the own results in computer chess
fora or public results on webpages. I believe in the first popular years of
WinBoard we have 10-15% of persons which give his results.

With time more and more persons have interest but with time a lot of persons
loosed the energy from the first years!

What is the reason for it?

- slower hardware a lot of users have today?
The users are thinking that the results are not interesting for the others?

- different groups of persons with the result, that more fora and so on are
available? A persons which have today an other opinion about a topic open
directly a new forum :-)

- not sorted information on only one or two main pages (I am happy that we have
today one main page for UCI and WB) but a lot of others will try to get a little
bit from the big area to make own things ... allways the same in all selections
today we have, not only chess. On the other hand, why have all the interesting
user pages not enough visitors and why users don't know the work by others?

The Reason:
The most users are only look for downloads and main information. The test work
by others isn't interesting because each user have all possibility to make own
things. I hope this is wrong because the work by others is today GOLD!

- to many engines, to many possibilities and to many downloads.
The workers which come at home and have only one hour time for chess have a lot
to do to download all the engines and see the other main information.

- GUI software?
Today the most GUIs have a lot of options. Users need many hours to understand
it and the most used only 5-10% from the options.
In times WinBoard is popular the Winboard GUI is good, have not many options but
works great. For each new engines we have long threads in computer chess fora.
Today we have perhaps two or three messages by users if a programmer add a new
engine in WWW. Only the strongest WB / UCI engines have more messages in fora.

I can give much more reasons ...
And I believe the combination from all is the reason for a bad situation we have
today. An amateur programmer from an engine which have 2.000 ELO must a long
time search a good tester for a little bit helping. Today we have more
programmers as good testers, think so :-)

In five years the good testers from today have an own program :-)

To make all compatible to all isn't the best way today!
This is the results of all what I can see.

So we all have to like ChessBase and the non compatible programs:
Fritz, Junior, Hiarcs ... this is today better for the commercial area and the
user must payed for it. All where the user must payed have a bigger priority to
other things the user must not payed. Freeware have such problems since a lot of
years. But with time more and more can see that Freeware have a much better
result because hundrets of persons help and for a commercial GUI perhaps a hand
full persons helps. It's clear that with years a good and long time development
freeware have a better results as a commercial software. I say it for five years
in a big thread and I will not write here what I must read for bad comments
about it.

Or not?
Thinking on all and then give your comment!
Better or not?

Perhaps the Freeware area from today must support the commercial ways :-)
Freeware today is tooo strong for a good balance !!

The first what we have to do is to delete the Arena page, or not?

Best
Frank
