I think it would be easier to just look at a RSS aggregator to see what the current topics are and if it's something that's interesting. If so then the user could log in like normal.. Otherwise, it takes longer to load the page, login and go threw the list. Not much time, but for people like me who doesn't visit as often, and read several online news/forums a day RSS is really nice.
