Maybe it is just his attention to every detail of the game as a whole, instead
of just "playing the position".

I remember his explanation about why a white bishop is better on a2 than on b3:
"When white bishop is on b3, it's easier for black to see it. On a2, it's
farther away and so he might forget about it later in my game."

He is actively searching for practical ways to cause you to stumble. This is an
obvious example. Imagine the subtle stumbling blocks :)
