I had similar problems.  I thinks there's a Rebel font that causes the problem.
Check out: http://www.rebel.nl/rebelfaq/r10faq02.htm#DISPLAY .  Follow the
instructions for fixing the incompatibility between the Matrox card and the
Cirrus chip.  I have an AMD chip, but this worked for me.
