I don't think it is the stateless approach that imposes restricted pondering. This should work just fine: position <current position with opponent to move, not ponder position!> go ponder Then the engine can do whatever it wants. Of course the engine can silently do whatever it wants anyway, but you have to go around the protocol a little bit.
