I am noticing a big increase in the number of scam auctions on ebay recently,
and usually they involve "high ticket" items.

If the seller has 0 feedback, I would DEFINITELY not bid. Unfortunately, there
are more and more cases of user accounts being hijacked, so you DEFINITELY
cannot assume that an auction is safe just because the seller has a high
feedback rating.

If you recognize the photos from any other auction, I would DEFINITELY not bid.

If the seller wants to be paid by Western Union, DON'T BID!

If the seller suggests any escrow company other than escrow.com, DON'T BID!

My usual take is to ask the seller to take a very specific picture of the item
(usually by holding a small sign up in front of the item with words that I
specify). If he can do that, then you are PROBABLY safe.
