Once computers regularly crush normal GMs (let's say now), competitions may still be arranged that are quite interesting & competitive--simply by arranging for computers to use, say, only 1/2 or 1/3 or 1/4, etc, the time available to the humans. The contest of continuously improving programming skill could continue (test being best program vs. humans), but with programs using 1 min or 30 seconds per move against humans using classical time controls (40/2). The humans would still have a fighting chance, while truely testing the abridged strength of the programs/programmers. The programmers would still be challenged to get better & better ... but progressively at shorter (for the comps) time controls, depending on just how strong they have become. --Steve
