My own beef about levels is that the programs seem to weaken themselves by for the most part playing their usual super-strong game, while throwing in a few ridiculous moves. As a result, playing an "1800"-rated opponent is not at all like playing a human with an 1800 rating. I predict great things for the programmer who can make a 2500-rated program play sensible 1800-level chess. Of course, to be fair, it's really our fault for being such lousy players . . .
