I had a similar problem some years back when I bought the game Baldur's Gate II.
It was a 4-CD game and required one to swicth CDs everytime one went to an area
of the game covered by a different CD. This, even with a complete 2.5 GB
install. I had bought it mostly to play on my laptop as I was travelling quite a
bit at that time, but it was major hassle. I complained to their support forum,
and was directed by one of their techs (no joking) to a site with cracked no-CD
executables. I realize any moderators reading this will do so with raised
eyebrows, but really that is the best suggestion I can give. It did solve my
problem then.
