What percentage of blitz games are lost on mouseslips? 5%? 10%? The young are used to using screens and mice for various tasks which do not come as 'naturally' to us slightly older folk. Perhaps the more over-the-board play you have enjoyed over the years the harder it is to maintain a similar standard on a screen. Apart from the aesthetic and competitive motivation aspects. Personally I suspect that the lack of perspective/depth helps me to miss moves which are crystal clear on a board. Some data would be helpful to test these opinions.
