Okay, David. I just re-installed Shredder 8, and my "problem" is fixed. The
version of Tablebase.eng packaged with Shredder 8 can read multi-part
tablebases, whereas the version packaged with Hiarcs 9 can't.

The Shredder 8 version probably isn't the newest, judging by the posts made by
Manfred and Jeroen in this thread. The new version is MUCH larger, and it has a
version number. Does anyone reading this message know what changes have been
made to the new Tablebase.eng to justify it being four times as big as the
previous version?
