As I recall there were two parallel cycles - the PCA and the FIDE. Kamsky won the FIDE cycle and finally lost to Karpov in the title match, while Anand (as you said) won the PCA cycle and lost to Kasparov in the title match. However, along the way Kamsky did beat Kramnik, although I don't remember which cycle it was in. I may be mistaken, but I seem to vaguely remember that Kamsky beat Anand in the FIDE cycle and lost to him in the PCA cycle. Paul
