To answer your questions/comments:

-- It appears that The King 3.33 is stronger than 3.23. There are different
opinions on the increase in strength though -- some say very little, some have
said 50 points or more.

-- I wouldn't necessarily say that the size of the program determines the
strength of the engine.

-- The King is written in straight C, just like most engines, I would expect.

-- Like any great engine author, Johan has spent MANY YEARS optimizing The King,
improving its strength and speed at the same time. It's no surprise to me that
the CMX000 version of The King is a couple of KB smaller than the version in
CM9000.
