I recently purcased Gandalf 6, installed it, and ran it once. I then copied both gandalf60.exe and gandalf60.dll into C:\Program Files\ChessBase\Engines\UCI for creation as a uci engine under the Fritz 8 GUI. First I ran a quick test of 6 10 minute games vs Fritz 8. Fritz 8 used it's native Fritz 8 book, while Gandalf used a homemade book: D4 (Shredder 8's book combined with about 100,000 correspondence games). This test was run on a PIII, 866 MHz cpu (WinMe OS) with 512 Megs RAM, each engine having 128 Megs to use. Amazing. Gandalf 6 defeated Fritz 8 5.5 - .5. An unbelievable result. Next, for a better test, I set up a 2RR tournament of nine engines. Each engine had 30 minutes for each game. The engines were: Chess Tiger 15.0, Fritz 6, Gambit Tiger 2.0, List 5.12, Aristarch 4.50, Nimzo 8, Junior 6.0, Gandalf 6.0, and Crafty 17.14. These engines seemed to provide a sufficient variety of strength for a better test of where Gandalf would fit into my collection of engines. I expected Gandalf would be in the top 10 or so engines. But: Gandalf scored only +3, -9, =4. Individually, Gandalf scored v. Chess Tiger 15 (-2), v. Fritz 6 (-2), v.Gambit Tiger 2.0 (.5). v. List 512 (1-1), v.Aristarch 4.5 (1-1), v. Nimzo 8 (.5), v.Jr.6 (.5), v.Crafty 17.14 (1.5-.5). Both of these results seem extreme. Would anyone care to comment on this? Also: Does anyone know if Chess Tiger 2004 be released as a Chessbase item?
