I read this story some times ago, but I am not sure whether it is a real fact or a fairy-tale: The Chess Federation of the West Germany wanted the government to consider chess as "a useful sport with a pedagigical effect". It should give the Federation some financial beneficia. This acknowledgement was obtained in 1982. The decisive role was played by the quotation from the letter of King Friedrich(Frederich) II The Great: "Chess cultivates the inclination to independent thinking..." The end of the sentence was omitted. It was: "...therefore it should not be approved."
