I also get crushed by the computer, but there is hope.

I play against phalanx on linux like so:

xboard -fcp phalanx -tc 1 -mps X -ponderNextMove false -size Medium

tc sets the timecontrol (1 minute in this case).

MPS sets the moves per timecontrol.  Phalanx, rather foolishly does a pure
division.  So you can set the effective timecontrol to something like 10 seconds
per game.  If I set -mps to 250 on a Celeron 1.8 Phalanx gets 4-5 ply, and I
score about 40% or so IF I manage to not get sucked into its bullet chess :)
